Over the years, the cryptocurrency ecosystem has increasingly shifted toward closed platforms, complex applications, and systems that often feel far removed from the original spirit of the Internet.
At SimosNap, we decided to experiment with a different approach.
We developed a new integration for KiwiIRC that allows users to connect their MyDoge wallet directly to the chat and send Dogecoin transactions to other users or donate to IRC channels.
The goal was not to build yet another crypto feature, but to bring the concept of social microtransactions back into an open and lightweight protocol such as IRC.
How It Works
The integration is simple and straightforward:
- Send DOGE to another user directly from their nickname
- Allow IRC channels to receive donations
- Confirm transactions through the MyDoge browser extension
- No balances stored on the server
- No centralized virtual credit system
All transactions are executed directly from the user's wallet.
Why Dogecoin?
Dogecoin continues to embody many of the values associated with the early Internet:
- Simple
- Fast
- Accessible
- Designed for tipping and microtransactions
For these reasons, it felt like the perfect fit for a social integration within IRC.
IRC Can Still Evolve
Many people see IRC as a technology of the past.
In reality, IRC still offers characteristics that remain highly relevant today:
- Open protocols
- Lightweight infrastructure
- Interoperability
- Decentralization
- Customization
- Freedom from algorithmic feeds and manipulated timelines
Over the years, SimosNap has worked to modernize the IRC experience while preserving the network's original philosophy:
An open platform where users can build communities and create their own tools.
This Dogecoin integration is another step in that direction.
A Small Experiment Between the Old and the New Internet
Watching a Dogecoin transaction happen in real time inside an IRC chat feels surprisingly natural.
It almost looks like a meeting point between two different eras of the Internet.
On one side:
- Open protocols
- Long-standing communities
- Lightweight and hackable software
On the other:
- Decentralized wallets
- Peer-to-peer payments
- Digital microtransactions
Perhaps even the oldest protocols can still find new ways to evolve.
